Building Codes.

BEAR maintains a vast archive of building codes from cities spanning the country, from east to west and north to south, dating from the 1940s. hen a client needed a reference on building codes in New York City, BEAR was able to respond rapidly and reliably.

The major model building code used in the United States is developed by the International Code Council (ICC) and the International Building Code (ICB). The main purpose of the building codes is to protect public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to the construction and occupancy of buildings and structures. Over the years, codes change. This is as true for fire codes regarding asbestos as it is for other lesser known concerns.

Building Codes in History

Ancient Babylon was host to one of the world’s first building codes. Although many copies are believed to have existed at one time, the Code or Codex of Hammurabi is found today in only one surviving complete example. Currently on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Code is inscribed on a basalt stone slab measuring seven feet high.
